As a crossroads of several civilizations, Spain boasts a number of historical cities and towns of fascinating diversity as evidenced by its people, its varied countryside and its rich history.
The diversity of cultures that have left a mark on Spain are vast, including the Romans, Moors, Phoenicians, and Gypsies. As a result of such cultural richness and varied landscapes, each region of Spain could easily be considered a country all its own.
Similarly Spain's culinary heritage is equally varied and as we will have the opportunity to experience and appreciate, the Basque cuisine will provide yet another exciting dimension to this trip during which a meal in any restaurant can be turned into an exceptional and exquisite experience.
Indeed our journey to Spain will surely deliver on this promise as we make our way to San Sebastian, one of the crown-jewels of the Basque Region and the undisputed top gastronomic destination in the entire country, boasting the second largest concentration of Michelin-starred restaurants per square meters in the world!
Our home in San Sebastian will be one of the great hotels on Concha Beach, in the heart of the old town. This location will also allow us to access within walking distance major points of interest, the festival's venues and great restaurants as well as affording us opportunities to enjoy "pintxos", bar finger food which in this town has been elevated to a culinary art form! Indeed a favorite pastime amongst friends is to "ir de pintxos" or "txikiteo", a "refined" version of a pub crawl!
Enhancing our experience and indeed the main focus for this trip, will be the world-class Jazzaldia Jazz Festival for which arrangements have already been made to secure tickets for all the concerts.
As we have done on several of our past WBGO jazz-focused trips, the evenings will be devoted to the jazz concerts but during the six glorious days of the core portion of our trip, we will have the opportunity to visit some of the most beautiful and iconic locations in the coastal, north-eastern part of Basque Country.
Not to be missed is the magnificent town of Bilbao which reinvented itself in the nineties and has evolved into one of the region's most cosmopolitan cities, boasting international avant-garde architecture as well as the world-renowned Guggenheim Museum Bilbao.
A ferry ride will take us to the town of Getaria, a coastal village known for its exquisite and refreshing Txakoli wine, a perfect pairing to the local seafood specialties.
On yet another day we will venture further east along the Basque coastline all the way to Biarritz on the French Côte Basque where we will realize why this entire coast was the destination of choice for Europe's royalty and gentry alike, looking to renew their health and energy in the Mar Cantábrico, known for its curative properties.
Also featured the charming town of Hondarribia, one of the most beautiful villages on the Basque coast and another highly sought after culinary destination, a perfect spot for our lunch!
Over the last few years we have had the privilege to enjoy world-class jazz in some of the most beautiful and evocative locales in the world, there is no doubt that San Sebastian and the Basque Region of Spain will rank at the very top of our list, one that we are certain will enrich our lives and deepen our appreciation for an ancient and exquisite culture!
